1997年にセバスチャン・ユンガーが実話を元に執筆したノンフィクション小説『パーフェクトストーム -史上最悪の暴風に消えた漁船の運命』が原作。1991年秋の大嵐で行方不明になったアンドレア・ゲイル号に乗船し海に消えたクルー達を描いている。クルー達が船上で自分達の命を守るジャッジができる機会は２度あったが、そのジャッジを誤ってしまい、命を失ったのだと思った。だれにだって、生きて入れば、命に係わるジャッジの機会が訪れる可能性がある。その時、瞬時に、命を守るジャッジをするためには、どのような心持でいたらいいのかを教わったような気がする。

過程なくして、最悪の事態が勃発する確率は､きわめて少ない。最悪の事態が勃発する前の過程で、最悪な状態を未然に防ぐための判断機会が、少なくとも１度は発生するものだ。
事故発生後に、「あの時、なんでああしなかったんだ」、「あの時、こうしていれば」といった自責の念にかられたり、周辺から責め立てられるのは、事前のふるまいや考え方によって、最悪な状態を防ぐ術があったからだ。
昨日の記事に書いた「知床観光船KAZU1の事故」でも、それは当てはまることではある。知床観光船の安全管理には不備不足があった。KAZU１の船長は、「海が荒れるから出航しない方がよい」といった同業者（地元漁協組合長や別の運航会社スタッフ）の助言を聞き入れなかった。出港をあきらめれば惨事は起きなかったのが残念でたまらない。自然の脅威の認識不足からくる過信は、命取りである。

The Perfect Storm

It is regrettable that no disaster occurred if I gave up leaving the port. Overconfidence resulting from lack of awareness of the threat of nature is fatal.
