2022年9月8日に、エリザベス女王（エリザベス二世、全名は、エリザベス・アレクサンドラ・メアリー）が亡くなられた。享年96歳、歴代最長の70年を超える在位期間であった。
女王の父親はジョージ6世（ヨーク公アルバート王子）である。ジョージ6世は吃音に悩まされた国王。映画『英国王のスピーチ』（2010年）は、ジョージ6世の伝記を映画化したものだ。母親は、エリザベス妃（スコットランド貴族の娘）。女王は、2人姉妹の姉で、妹の名前はマーガレットである。
ジョージ6世が即位すると、女王は推定相続人となり、第二次世界大戦中は、英国女子国防軍に属し公務に携った。
その後、女王は、1947年に、フィリップ・エディンバラ公爵と結婚。3男1女（チャールズ、アン、アンドルー、エドワード）を出産した。

その後、女王が君臨する国家や領土の数は減少したが、イギリス、カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドの４カ国に加え、ジャマイカ、バハマ、グレナダ、パプアニューギニア、ソロモン諸島、ツバル、セントルシア、セントビンセント・グレナディーン、ベリーズ、アンティグア・バーブーダ、セントクリストファー・ネイビスは、女王がなくなるまで、女王が君主であった。また、女王は、共和制国家を含むコモンウェルス・オブ・ネイションズ（イギリス帝国の旧領土である56の加盟国から構成される経済同盟、英連邦）50か国以上の元首（コモンウェルスの長）でもあり、連帯の象徴でもあった。
夫のフィリップ公爵は、去年4月、99歳で亡くなり、女王は、「人生に大きな穴があいたような心境」と話されていたが、その後も変わらず冷静に公務に携わっていた。2022年6月には、女王の在位70周年の記念式典（プラチナジュビリー）が催されたばかりでもあった。
