女装したマイケル・ドーシー（ダスティン・ホフマン）は、ドロシー・マイケルズと偽って、オーディションを受け、役者の仕事を獲得。一躍スターになるものの、愛するジュリー・ニコルズ（ジェシカ・ラング）にレズビアンでないことを示すため、ドラマの放映中、勝手に台詞を変更し、自分が男性であることを暴露する。ダスティンの気品美は、ジェシカの自然美と相性がよい。そしてストーリーのムードメーカーは、スティーブン・ビショップの「It Might Be You」。切なくも優しくゆらめく波動が、心の内に拡散する。
