優勝賞金3億3560万円は誰の手に！

マスターズ・トーナメント（Masters Tournament）、PGA選手権（PGA Championship）、全米オープン選手権（U.S. Open Championship）、ジ・オープン選手権（The Open Championship）は、ゴルフにおける世界最高峰のトーナーメントで、メジャーと呼ばれる。
その４大メジャーの中で、唯一、開催場所が毎年同じなのが、マスターズ・トーナメント（Masters Tournament）である。
マスターズの開催場所は、アメリカジョージア州オーガスタ・ナショナル・ゴルフクラブ（７４３５ヤード、１８ホール、パー７２）。

同クラブは、もともと果樹園だった場に作られたゴルフ場で、ホールの名前もすべて樹木や花の名前。緑の樹木の他、アザレア、カメリア、ハナミズキなどの花が鮮やかに咲いている。コースは難しく、球足が速いグリーンは「ガラスのグリーン」と呼ばれ、「オーガスタのグリーンには“魔女”が棲む」と言われている。また、１１番、１２番、１３番は、「ショットした後は神のみぞ知る」一筋縄ではいかない名物ホールで、「アーメンコーナー」と名付けられている。
マスターズの初回大会は１９３４年である。毎年９０人前後の招待資格を満たす名手（マスター）が選ばれ、参加することができる「ゴルフの祭典」であり、観客は「パトロン」と呼ばれている。大会の日程は、基本的には、４月２週日曜日が最終日になるように組まれ、連続４日間で、７２ホールのストローク・プレーを行う。前半２日間は予選ラウンドで、後半2日間が決勝ラウンドである。予選ラウンドで５０位タイ以内の成績でないと、決勝ラウンドに進出できない。優勝者には、優勝賞金と緑色のブレザー「グリーンジャケット」が贈られる。グリーンジャケットは、通常、ゴルフクラブのロッカーに保管され、本大会期間中のみ、着用が許される。

昨年度大会では、松山英樹がアジア出身選手として初優勝したため、日本のゴルフ愛好者たちは、今年度大会において、松山の２連覇に熱い期待を寄せていた。さて、結果はいかに・・・。

前回大会の王者、松山英樹は、通算２オーバーで１４位。
