この映画は、カンボジア内戦の取材記事でピューリッツァー賞を受賞したニューヨーク・タイムズ記者シドニー・シャンバーグの実話を元にした1984年公開映画である。カンボジア内戦で、ポル・ポト率いるクメール・ルージュがカンボジアを支配。シャンバーグと一緒に取材していたカンボジア人ディス・プランは、クメール・ルージュが支配する集団農場へ移送される。過酷な労働と飢え、虐殺の恐怖に怯える生活は生き地獄。忍耐も限界となったプランは、覚悟を決め脱出を試みる。その後、死と隣り合わせの紆余曲折の末、命かながらに、タイの難民キャンプにたどり着き、シャンバーグと再会する。この映画には、痛みしかない。ラストの再会場面で、ジョンレノンの「イマジン」が流れるまでのおよそ2時間20分、私は、胸が詰まりっぱなしでずっと息苦しかった。あまりに惨すぎたため、私がどうにか平穏無事に生きている今さえも当たり前と思えなくなった。あまり欲張らず、今生きていることに感謝したい。
